Silvery Slocan Museum

Getting acquainted with one of your ancestor's history, learning about the area's heritage, including mining, transportation, logging, commerce and early day village life, are only two of the reasons to visit the Silvery Slocan Museum located on 6th Avenue near the lake, in New Denver.

The two-storey, recently restored, heritage building was a branch of the Bank of Montreal from 1897 until 1969. In 1971, the building was leased to the Chamber of Commerce, to be used as a Museum. Currently, the building is owned by the Village of New Denver, and the Museum is operated by the Silvery Slocan Historical Society, a non-profit organization.

Included, in its many exhibits, are collections of records, artifacts and photographs of the Slocan Lake Area, instruments from the early Slocan Community Hospital, artifacts from the old Knox Church, and a room dedicated to New Denver Japanese-Canadians.

Of particular interest on the main floor are memorabilia from the New Market Hotel destroyed by fire in 1974 together with a collection of journals and business machines, and the original Bank of Montreal vault. Exhibits in the building's Annex that at one time housed the British Columbia Security Commission Office, include a collection of farming and blacksmith machinery and tools.

There is a courtyard to the east of the building. In this outer courtyard, is the "Lancet" exhibit, an 18' motor vessel, built around 1912. For more information, check the "Heritage" link.

Preservation of the Museum by the Silvery Slocan Historical Society is an on-going project. To commemorate the building's 100th birthday, a Centennial Rose Garden has been created. A wall-plaque, on the westside of the building, lists names of donors to the project, many in remembrance of friends and family. You, too, can donate to the maintenance of this garden for a contribution of $50.00 and have a small inscribed platen added to our wall-plaque. Please send cheques to:
